hi, i have acer 5920 too and I had the same problem, but solution is very simple: click right-button on master of sound - right-top corner near the clock->Open Volume Control->Edit->Preferences then in new in appeared window turn on "surround", turn it on on Volume control and push it up) enjoy! this is for ubuntu 8.04 i386 Sorry for my English
