I got the same problem after upgrading from Hardy to Intrepid Alpha-6
(currently using beta with latest updates).

Sep 27 21:14:37 kmos pulseaudio[6340]: core-util.c: Failed to open
configuration file '/home/kmos/.pulse/volume-restore.table': Permission
denied

When I start something to play.. example: audacious, it shows this error
message at /var/log/messages.

So I don't have any sound in my system.
