I did not manually edit the partition table though. I was trying to
install 6.06LTS on a system that had a 40 GB IDE drive of which about 12
GB was allocated to an NTFS partition for Windows 2000. I left the rest
of the disk unpartitioned and when the Ubuntu installer got to the
partitioning phase, I let it do what it wanted - seemingly to use the
remaining space for an ext3 partition and a swap partition. Install went
well for a while and then crashed at 81%.
