with linux for about 15 years, I can't keep track with every detail
and all those details in the sound system that keep continuously
changing.

Indeed there are different sound cards:

% asoundconf list
Names of available sound cards:
SB
pcsp
HDMI


which would explain that sometimes there is regular sound
and sometimes not.

Thanks for the hint, I'll check that and report.
