Is this symptom still reproducible in 8.10 alpha?
Note two things:
1) the symptom really is a codec issue; it /may/ be able to be worked around
there;
2) the use of PulseAudio in hardy and later Ubuntu releases allows for the use
of the pavucontrol utility, which is much more useful for multichannel
configurations.
