Just to let everyone know, I had this problem as well on my LG LW70 laptop with Hardy installed. The problem was intermittent, and affected gedit as well - the whole system would freeze and had to be hard rebooted. It mostly happened when I held down the backspace key, or pressed the tab key many times. Now that I've read this thread, it does seem to be related to times when the system beep would have sounded.
Disabling the system beep using System -> Preferences -> Sound -> System Beep seems to have fixed it.
