I have a similar same crashing problem after updating to Edgy. I only have one single pop account active at the moment, no IMAP.
The application crashes right after starting up. Re-installed Thunderbird: same problem. Removed .mozilla-thunderbird and the problem was gone. Re-copied my old Mail folder back to .mozilla-thunderbird, and it crashed again. I tried to copy folder-by folder to find out where the problem lies, but I can't find a pattern. I am using Ubuntu 6.10 on a VAIO S5M laptop.
