I had a similar problem. When I used the "Open With" option on the dialog bog, sometimes the torrent did not show up in the download list. I had to add the torrent through the add option in the transmission menu, locating the torrent in /tmp.
I am currently using Transmission version 1.34 (6778) and have not experienced that issue in some time.
