I experienced the same behavior today with a fresh install of 8.04.
The problem arises that once you updated Firefox to the newest security
release, the
language add-ons from the package "language-pack-gnome-{your language}" are no
longer compatible.
You can resolve this by adding the Hardy-proposed repository via the GUI or
command line interface
and executing a corresponding upgrade.
