I am doing this through Applications -> Settings -> Settings Manager, which brings up the Xfce settings manager. Then I bring up User Interface, on the right hand side of which has an option for Font and Font DPI:. The latter defaults to "System Default", setting it to some value corrects the font display issue for me.
