1. open up a terminal and type:

sudo displayconfig-gtk

2. configure your video card AND your monitor. You must supply your
monitor name. Then you would be able to change your screen resolution.
If unsure about your monitor's brand, just check with the generics. Just
remember that a "Plug and Play" monitor will always have and force the
safest screen resolution.
