*bump*

I confirm that I have exactly the same problem as Adam J Richardson when
attempting to update a LiveUSB 8.04 install using "hard-updates" source
to try and give me a system that has software versions at least
equivalent to (K)Ubuntu 8.04.1 install.

I too followed the instructions from www.pendrivelinux.com (but the
Kubuntu variant) and installed to ext2.

Without going to single user mode I can see the contents of
/var/log/syslog - from normal runlevel 2 - that looks (almost?)
identical to the attachment by Adam J Richardson:

Oct 2 01:16:03 ubuntu -- MARK --

I know that I should be able to make the LiveUSB boot from a newer kernel given
that "apt-cache policy linux-image-generic" shows:
  Installed: 2.6.24.16.18
  Candidate: 2.6.24.19.21

I wonder how this problem can be replicated in a non LiveCD or LiveUSB
system?
