Fred: the solution that you suggested is correct. The Nvidia packages
should clean that directory automatically when they are installed or
upgraded.

fate: (currently) driver 96.43.05 doesn't work in Intrepid and it's likely that 
this is the reason why the driver didn't work for you. For further information
