This bug was fixed in the package gdm-guest-session - 0.4

gdm-guest-session (0.4) intrepid; urgency=low
* gdm/guest-session-setup.sh: Do not use variable "$UID", since this is
reserved in bash. This fixes the guest session if /bin/sh points to bash.
