I second this bug, however you can change the resolution to 1280x 800 by
going to the monitor resolution and un checking mirror screens. But even
though the resolution changes to 1280 x 800 there is still an invisible
veridical wall on the right side preventing you from using that extra
space. The gnome bars on the top and bottom also do not resize to fit
the new resolution.

I am running Ubuntu 8.10 Beta i386, fully updated. as of 7pm pst.
