Hi Douglas, it seems that it's a hardware detection problem, most like that your display is incorrectly detected. Hardware detection has greatly improved in Ubuntu 8.04, can you check whether this problem persists in Ubuntu 8.04 and the Ubuntu 8.10 beta?
