ATI is noted at the top. This is an IBM Thinkpad R31 with Intel
graphics, see attached lspci.

Even when it's dead, the pointer still moves. X windows is still up,
but the keyboard tty is dead (except for power off) and the screen never
changes.
xfce4 works O.K., its Gnome-desktop actions that kills it.
