I must agree to that - because I'm one of them :) I've got the X1350 and it's affected by the same bug. I cannot understand why Ubuntu took the new Xorg version into the new release when it was clear that fglrx would not be working anymore. I'd go with any alternative solution as long as I can use fglrx (and therefore compiz - which IMHO is _required_ to use gnome effectively). So either a older Xorg Version or a ugly Xorg-fglrx patch to make get the old driver running.
