I figured out what the problem was/is. It seems that the hardware and software does not quite agree with one another. The radio can be physically turned on, but not recognized, and vice-versa.

I guess it's not really a bug, but without knowing to look at dmesg, I don't know how anyone would know the right sequence of button presses to get the card enabled! As you may notice, even with the help of dmesg it took me several tries to get it working.
