Well, I could mostly fix the problems by using asoundconf to use the SB sound output and blacklisting the sound driver for the internal speaker.
Meanwhile I upgraded the machine to intrepid beta and attached the machine to a HDMI connected flat panel TV, and again have the problem that the sound is not working, this time with HDMI.
