VarLogDistupgradeApttermlog.gz explains the error:

The application 'frontend' lost its connection to the display :0.0;
most likely the X server was shut down or you killed/destroyed
the application.
User postinst hook script [/sbin/update-grub] exited with value 1
/usr/share/debconf/confmodule: line 42: printf: write error: Broken pipe
dpkg: error processing linux-image-2.6.27-3-generic (--configure):
 subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

It looks like update-grub asked the user to resolve a conflict, which
they did using vim manually, and somewhere along the way, debconf lost
its connection to the X display and bailed out.

** Changed in: grub (Ubuntu)
Sourcepackagename: linux => grub
       Status: Incomplete => New
