In my case the bug is located in nvidia-glx-177.
I use a Sony 46 inch TV to watch movies in dual view.
After log-in into Ubuntu the right resolution is shown on the TV screen for 
just a second.
Then, the background image becomes smaller but I can still move the move across 
the whole screen.
But trying to start a movie player (smplayer and vlc tested) leeds to a crash 
of some gnome applications.
So I cant play movies on the laptop (vostro 1500 with Geforce 8400) or on the 
tv.

I tried using the 173 driver which resulted in a complete crash of the display, 
which I had to repair.
Getting back to 177 was quite hard, I had to remove the driver firstr and then 
use the console to instal it again....

For me this bug is quite critical as I can't watch my movies any more
