How do you know that it doesn't do anything? Do you get this message
every time you start language-selector?
What should happen is: install the language-pack-{gnome|kde}-$lang
paackages if they are missing, depending on if you have Gnome or KDE or
both applications installed.
You can check if those packages are installed with:
dpkg -l language-pack-gnome-it
dpkg -l language-pack-kde-it
