Booting up with the 'splash' parameter removed, so that usplash does not
run, does not fix the problem.

Removing the rc2.d file so gdm does not start at bootup, and then
starting it from a text console after the machine comes up does fix it.

If I change the script to just run X directly rather than through gdm
then the problem still occurs, so I'm guessing this is actually an X
problem.
