The symptoms described are fairly generic so it's hard to say what's
going on.  Some things to do:

* Attach your Xorg.0.log.  If it is an X bug (which it sort of sounds like), 
this is required.
* Try using the "recovery mode" option in grub, then "Resume normal boot"
* Try using the "recovery mode" option in grub, then drop to a command line and 
try launching X via "startx"
* Try disabling compiz (one way is to just chmod a-x /usr/bin/compiz)
* Try creating a new user and log in as that
* Try switching to the "vesa" driver in xorg.conf
