This bug is still open with Intrepid.

I would like to point out that the bug is present on a new installation of
texlive-full.
While I understand Norbert Preining's point of view (and I would like to thank
him and all Debian TeX group for their stellar work) and use cases, on a new
installation a symlink should be created and update-alternatives --auto should
be the default.

Unfortunately I installed texlive a few weeks ago, therefore I have no
way to check some log files to see whether the problem is actually
caused by some bug/problem when installing a different package.

Below is the output of update-alternatives:

[exit=0 [EMAIL PROTECTED]@karp ~]$
:LANG=C update-alternatives --display xdvi.bin
xdvi.bin - status is manual.
 link currently points to /usr/bin/xdvi-xaw.bin
/usr/bin/xdvi-xaw.bin - priority 30
Current `best' version is /usr/bin/xdvi-xaw.bin.
[exit=0 [EMAIL PROTECTED]@karp ~]$
:LANG=C update-alternatives --list xdvi.bin
/usr/bin/xdvi-xaw.bin
