I've gotten this problem again, and struggled for hours before the luck hit me. I believe it has something to do with x crashing after hiting apply. Cause the last time when it finally worked, x didn't crash on me. I'll have to check this further next time. But you can see from screenshot one of the bugs I'm experience with xrandr
