David: Thank you for leading me toward that issue. On the Login Window PreferencesI went to the "Local" tab and changed the style to "Plain with face browser". When I log out and log back in now I can see all the users again in the list. So I would consider this as a solution to my problem. I am now going to customize the login window to show some edubuntu stuff.
