Can confirm that the beta doesn't fix this; downloaded the beta and
tried to boot it, and booting failed.

Can also confirm that it's not a kernel issue. I was able to install
8.04 and use update manager to upgrade to 8.10 successfully.

I think it might be my Belkin F5D7000 v7 network card (an rtl8185
chipset). I'll try removing it during the weekend and then boot, and let
you guys know the result.
