Mac OSX seems to recognize that it's a DVD, and change permissions accordingly. I fail to reproduce this behaviour on CD/USB or other storage device. So as far as I can see, there's a special "hey, it's a DVD, let's randomly alter file permissions". So OSX *can* do it; Ubuntu should be able to do it, too, right?
