Hm.  It's hard to remember EXACTLY what I did, but I think that I asked
it to try the 3-way merge, and it then proceeded along and failed.  But
it's possible that I did a manual edit.  I think that I ended up asking
the package to leave it alone and then went and edited manually, but
that wouldn't appear here because it was a different update session.

I'm sorry - apport brought this up after it went in the second time, so
I figured that it was an error with the second install where it appeared
to have no problems.  But if it's just the conflict handling for grub
then that's known to have failed the previous time, but I'm just
surprised that it went to apport because it already told me that there
was a problem.

Since this appears to be just my confusion, I think this should be
closed.
