ethtool shows no eth0 device. Unfortunately I don't have a modem
connecting to the network so that I can't attach the output of commands
I've tried.

This happens to my eeepc-1000H which has a Realtek RTL8168C gigabit NIC.
The kubuntu 7.10 is based on linux 2.6.22-14-generic. Is it possible
that this version doesn't have the correct ethernet driver for this
chip?
