Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.17-10-generic

Boot Edgy or the Edgy installer on an MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum Socket 939
NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra ATX AMD Motherboard system. GRUB loads the kernel
and then the screen says "Starting Up" and hangs. I can only proceed
past GRUB when the kernel is given the "acpi=off" option.

I believe Knoppix shows this same behavior on this machine. Debian
Sarge never exhibited this problem. Sarge also powered-off fine as long
as the APM module was loaded.

acpi=off is problematic because then power-off doesn't work. After init
shuts down the screen says "Shutting Down" and hangs. Loading the APM
module does not fix this.

The problem is worse than just having to manually hit the power button
to power off after shutdown. Sometimes something on the motherboard
gets screwed up and I have to unplug the system for a couple minutes
before the power on button will work.

The BIOS is upgraded to the newest version.

** Affects: linux-source-2.6.17 (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: Unconfirmed
