just an update, after much messing around i have discovered that this
particular issue is not actually the kernel, but with the nvidia 177
driver, from what i can tell my system when i boot up the new kernel
isnt using the new nvidia driver, even though it is installed (at least
according to adept it is)

i have tried selecting hardware drivers from the system menu (kubuntu) and then
activating the 177 driver, but nothing seems to happen, if i then open
nvidia-settings (i do this form a terminal as root, eg - sudo/kdesudo
nvidia-settings)
i get this message -

" You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X
configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the
X server. "

if i do as the message says and run nvidia-xconfig as root when i
restart the x server i then get the issue i first described as a bug
with the new kernel, so it would seem that for some reason my system
doesnt like the new nvidia driver, or isnt using it for some reason.

hope this helps and sorry for any confusion
