Andrew: your problem is easy to solve. Type:
sudo apt-get remove --purge nvidia-173-kernel-source nvidia-settings
and restart the Xserver.
Ahmed: your problem must be different since you're using an NVIDIA card.
Can I see your /var/log/Xorg.0.log and the output of "glxinfo"?
