I've got a little update on this situation. After a sudden act of despair, I 
was able to find the causes for this "mysterious" freezes. The up to date 
nvidia hardware controllers were indeed the cause of this problem. As a last 
resort, I uninstalled them and the freezes and display distortions were no 
longer a problem. The downside is that any 3D game and some rendering tools are 
out of the horizon and even some 2D applications are now slower... but most 
applications are handled quite nicely. This seems to be a problem for a long 
time. I was able to find some registers dated of 2006 and not even the new 177 
drivers have fixed this issue.
As I said before, if somebody needs to test something, as always I'm available 
to help on this.
