I installed xserver-xorg-input-joystick and it fixed the problem with the joystick crashing X and I can now play my games.
However, two issues remain: 1.) The gamepad still controls the mouse. This should not be by default. 2.) Joysticks and gamepads should work out of the box in Ubuntu. If not, the backlash from gamers is going to be HUGE and alone can be enough to hurt Ubuntu's reputation.
