I received a replacement wireless adapter in the mail (based on the same chipset) and after installing it, was disappointed to receive the same error.
On a whim, I returned it and ordered the other wireless card the X60 supports (Intel Pro/wireless 3945ABG) and installed it. It works perfectly. I'm not sure what the problem is, but I guess the atheros driver is conflicting with some other hardware? (Perhaps the WAN card?) Anyway, it's working now. I'll leave this bug open and let the maintainer decide what to do. If you'd like any info on the hardware in the laptop just let me know what commands to run.
