I have the same problem with a laptop LG LW70 and Intrepid Ibex (kernel 2.6.27-7-generic). With the previous kernels of Intrepid Ibex, there was no problem. Disabling the system beep using System -> Preferences -> Sound -> System Beep seems to have fixed it only in gnome. When I use "tab" in tty1 (ctrl-alt-f1), the system still freeze.
