I am having the same problem. My /etc/network/interfaces output is

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto dsl-provider
iface dsl-provider inet ppp
pre-up /sbin/ifconfig eth0 up # line maintained by pppoeconf
provider dsl-provider

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet manual

when I run sudo ifconfig -a I got

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:e0:1c:3b:83:77
          inet addr:192.168.1.2 Bcast:61.1.96.69 Mask:255.255.255.0

when I ping by ping -c5 192.168.1.1 I got this out put

PING 192.168.1.1 (192.168.1.1) 56(84) bytes of data.
>From 192.168.1.2 icmp_seq=1 Destination Host Unreachable

>From 192.168.1.2 icmp_seq=4 Destination Host Unreachable
>From 192.168.1.2 icmp_seq=5 Destination Host Unreachable

what should I do so that it works for me. I have tried everything.
