I tried your first suggestion and as expected it did not work. After
pressing enter the screen read '[sudo] password for nutzer:'. I typed in
my login password and enter and the screen read: '* Starting GNOME
Display Manager...                [ OK ]' followed by the next line:
'[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$'.

Then I tried your second suggestion and I am sorry to say it did not
work either. AFter pressing enter the screen wrote several lines in
German (I bought the computer in Germany and the computer is set up in
the German language). I have tried to translate the text into english
line by line

Abhaengigkeitsbaum wird aufgebaut
   Dependency tree is being built
Reading state information... Fertig
  Reading state information... Finished
Re-installation von GDM ist nocht moeglich

es kann nicht heruntergeladen werden
   it can not be down-loaded

   0 actualized, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not actualized

I really appreciate your help, but have you got any other ideas on what
i can do??
