I've thought about this bug a lot over the past while, and I'm not going
to fix it. With the fix in bug #196135, it's about as close as is
sensible as long as size matters, especially as timidity is now more
widely integrated into gstreamer through wildmidi. freepats does most
of the job for the simple use case, fluid-soundfont is clearly suggested
for people who want something more, and there's flexibility to support
more soundfonts as desired.
So, thank you for filing the bug : it's provided a wealth of inspiration
towards improving the state of MIDI in Ubuntu in general. There are now
soundfonts available, timidity actually plays sounds by default, and
gstreamer can handle MIDI, which integrates well with the default
desktop. That timidity itself doesn't force ths installation of a full
soundfont should be relatively unimportant at this point. If you feel
strongly that the bug *should* be fixed, and that it's worth the
installation of a full soundfont, please reopen.
