sorry I was slower to get the attached information. I recovered an old
drive with 8.04.1 and plugged it into the box, reconfigured X with sudo
dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-org and run a few tests.

general procedure:
- booted 8.04.1 in recovery mode
- run xfix from the recovery menu
- continue startup
- if the x display was scrambled, used CTRL+ALT+F1 to get to a console
- sometimes even the console was scrambled. cycling once through
  CTRL+ALT+F1 CTRL+ALT+F2 CTRL+ALT+F3 CTRL+ALT+F4 and then again CTRL+ALT+F1
  brought it back
- copied /etc/X11/xorg.conf and /var/log/Xorg.0.log to a new folder
- changed physical display connections
- rebooted and restarted the procedure

I did this three times, with three configurations.

display0: 1920x1200 Acer P243w
display1: 1280x1024 Benq FP931

folder first:
- display0 on DVI, display1 on VGA
- result: display0: scrambled colors, display1: black

folder second:
- display1 on DVI, display 0 on VGA
- result: display0: black, display1:scrambled colors

folder manual:
- display0 on DVI, nothing on VGA
- result: 1280x1024 on display0
- only xorg.conf saved in manual/xorg.conf.single.1920.dvi

The I used nvidia-settings. It recognized properly the two displays and
set them up at the right resolution. I did tweak a few settings manually
and stored xorg.conf.nvidia in folder manual.

My Box has 6GB RAM. 512MB are used by the G-Force 6150.
