I also have the same Realtek chipset in a Toshiba Laptop, and the device
appears on the USB bus rather than PCI. I too tried all manner of solutions
involving Ndiswrapper, use of WinXP drivers/inf files, etc, but nothing would
work.

The recent release of the Intrepid Ibex beta has solved this issue for
me, as support for RTL8187B seems to be included by default.

Unfortunately I now have a different problem where the wireless
connection 'stalls' after 5 minutes use, but only on certain brands of
wireless router. However the drivers work fine on the wireless AP at
home.

Hopefully the latest release of Ibex will solve your problem too. Tell
your dad to give it another go, it's so much faster than the 'market
leader' on my AMD64 laptop.

Regards,
Philanthropist.
