Ok, so it IS a bug ;-) In fact a regression.

But 0.8.6 was already detecting that pretty well, I've been using "Open directory" to watch movies on VLC for ages. But on the 0.9.3 it seems that it was un-implented, and now the only working method is "Open Disk". What I was trying to explain is that I got used to "Open Directory" because it was the only way you could watch "DVD on Disc" on Windows. Because the Windows wxWidget asks for a volume letter in the "Open Disk" interface, and even if you do a subst to make a volume from your directory, it won't play like that. So I hope you changed the interface for Windows users because otherwise they have no way anymore to watch a "DVD on Disk"... and I glad I'm using Ubuntu now because at least I can still do that!
