Ok, so it IS a bug ;-)

In fact a regression.

You say : However, VLC 1.0 will work in both case detecting that a Open
Folder is VIDEO_TS.

But 0.8.6 was already detecting that pretty well, I've been using "Open
directory" to watch movies on VLC for ages. But on the 0.9.3 it seems
that it was un-implented, and now the only working method is "Open
Disk".

What I was trying to explain is that I got used to "Open Directory"
because it was the only way you could watch "DVD on Disc" on Windows.
Because the Windows wxWidget asks for a volume letter in the "Open Disk"
interface, and even if you do a subst to make a volume from your
directory, it won't play like that. So I hope you changed the interface
for Windows users because otherwise they have no way anymore to watch a
"DVD on Disk"... and I glad I'm using Ubuntu now because at least I can
still do that!

Anyway it's wise to think to put this function back in 1.0

And as we still have an official way to play "DVD on Disk", you could
mark this thread as: suggestion / scheduled for 1.0
