For Ubuntu '8.04' (actually 8.04.1) it still doesn't automatically remember mounted drive icons as per Ubuntu 7.10 Ubuntu 8.10 Beta (kernel 2.6.27-4-generic) has delayed ReStart or ShutDown problems, not fixed by updated kernel 2.6.27-7-generic and also does not automatically remember mounted drive icons. HOWEVER, my work-around works in all three cases. Using only NTFS logical hard drives for data storage and then Adding the 'NTFS Configuration Tool' and running it, one can select those NTFS drives which creates desktop icons that do get remembered after a restart. Unfortunately, unlike LinuxMint 4 or 5 there's no 'Home' folder icon.
