This bug as it stands can be fixed perfectly with the Novell patch (I added the patch manually and it only affects one function in qemu anyway) If you want me to make a patch for the Ubuntu Intrepid version I have no issue in doing that. I now have fully working USB from within XP under qemu (using the version in the KVM source package)
