You have been subscribed to a public bug by Jamie Strandboge (jdstrand): Overview:
The customer installed 7.10 Server freshly and used the procedure outlined below to allow, via an IPMI card, a remote connection (Serial Over LAN) to his system. Everything worked. He then tried the same on a clean install of 8.04 Server and the setup breaks as explained further. Procedure: 1. Ensured /etc/securetty contained a ttyS1 line 2. The file /etc/event.d/ttyS1 was created by copying the tty1 file and ensuring the following line exists: exec /sbin/getty 19200 ttyS1 3. Edited his /boot/grub/menu.lst. It is attached as a separate file. Breakage: The customer can log in but the user session freezes while the contents of /etc/motd is being displayed. Bypassing motd yields a non-frozen session but further screen output will always freeze the session. Hardware and software used by the customer: IPMI card http://www.supermicro.com/manuals/other/AOC-SIMSO.pdf Motherboard http://www.supermicro.com/manuals/motherboard/3200/MNL-0982.pdf Client software used is IPMITool http://ipmitool.sourceforge.net/manpage.html The output to dmesg is attached as a separate file. Documentation on the IPMI specification: http://www.intel.com/design/servers/ipmi/pdf/IPMIv2_0_rev1_0_E3_markup.pdf Business concern: IPMI is a common server-level technology and so is something that needs to work.
