I don't have much to add; just concerned that this may not be getting
the necessary attention.  My problem sounds the same as described above,

lsusb recognizes the device (external powered USB enclosure for a 160GB
ext3-formatted drive).

Running an up-to-date Intrepid beta on an HP dv5t laptop:

Linux hp-velo.localdomain 2.6.27-7-generic #1 SMP Tue Oct 14 18:38:59 UTC 2008 
x86_64 GNU/Linux

Device works fine when attached to an old Inspiron 5100 Dell laptop
running an up-to-date Hardy.
