Stefan, are you still having this problem? Note that in Intrepid, the
cupsys package has been renamed to cups, and the current version is
1.3.9-1. Are you still seeing messages in dmesg? Those are apparmor
rejections; to verify one way or the other whether apparmor is
interfering, you can convert the profile for cups to a non-enforcing
logging mode by doing "sudo /usr/sbin/aa-complain /usr/sbin/cupsd" (use
/usr/sbin/aa-enforce in the same way to turn enforcement back on).

FInally, if you are still having problems, can you attach the output of
the printingbuginfo script as described at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PrintingBugInfoScript? It may also be helpful to
enable the "Save debugging information for troubleshooting" in the
Server -> Settings dialog in the System -> Administration -> Printing
tool, as that will report more debugging information in cups' error-log.
